Carissa’s Desk

Welcome Carissa Tanton!

Hello!

My name’s Carissa Tanton and I’m going to be helping at Seymour as Associate Editor for the online magazine. I’ve been a fan of Seymour Projects for a while now and I’m thrilled to be joining the team. I love to be creative and Seymour has really inspired me to create in many different ways, without being afraid that the outcome will have to be something perfect. If I find myself a rare spare moment you’ll often find me writing, drawing, or folding up some origami. I find if I don’t create a little something each day then I just don’t feel right. Even if it’s just capturing a photograph or knitting a few knots on a scarf. I’m no artist, but I truly believe that a little self-expression enriches our lives and taps into our subconscious, helping us to understand ourselves and our raison d’être. I love Seymour’s links to Philosophy and Psychology, two other passions of mine, and I often find a little written wisdom will inspire me to get creating. I can’t think of a better way to sum it up than a quote from Kurt Vonnegut:

“Go into the arts. I’m not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing an art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow , for heaven’s sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.”

Seymour is rare, extraordinary and has been a wonderful source of inspiration for me. I’m looking forward to introducing some new ideas, insights, and iconoclasts to encourage introspection, imagination, and creation. So don’t be afraid, go do something wonderful, go explore, go mind surfing, or just regular surfing, and then create something.
