Karl currently works his magic at: The Mystery Tattoo Club in Paris.

“I began tattooing during my first year of University at UCSB in California. I received my first tattoo that year, and began to frequent tattoo shops to hang out and ask questions.  I already had a love for drawing and watercolor, and had been looking for a way to use this love as a way to live:  Tattooing was perfect!

I asked for and was accepted as an apprentice at the shop where I received my first tattoo.  It took about two years to learn the basics: First you learn about cleanliness and sterilization, then it moves on to the mechanics of the tattoo machine as well as how all the equipment works. Finally there is a lot to learn about different skin types and how to properly tattoo them. After 2 years I was finally allowed to tattoo.

When I finished my university studies (a BA in sociology), the choice was clear to me: tattooing had become my life, and I decided to make this my focus. I began traveling to work in different tattoo shops around the world and learn as much as I could from other artists.

During those 10 years of travels I fell in love with Paris, and decided to move here.  When the Mystery Tattoo Cub was opened by Easy Sacha, I asked him if I could have a permanent spot and was accepted. I’m proud to continue learning from Sacha, a truly world-class tattoo artist.

My advice to people who would like to be tattoo artists: Draw as much as you can, form friendships with different tattoo shops, and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Those who are persistent will get an all-important apprenticeship. DON’T try to tattoo without a professional by your side to guide you… the result will be there forever!”
