A Case for an infinity of yous

It’s safe to say that we are all intrigued by the possibility of meeting our physical double – our Doppelganger. The term has often been used to explore the duality of human nature.

However, the term is not confined to mythology or fiction – the phenomenon is thought to exist on a quantum and cosmological level as well.

Contemporary cosmology suggests that our universe is just one of an infinite number existing side by side, like drops in the ocean. And because there might be an infinite number of universes, it also suggests that there might be an infinite number of yous and mes playing out the finite (but incredibly large) number of possible events, with every possible outcome occurring as well.

Of course, the idea of you being one doppelganger in an infinity of yous could make you feel rather insignificant; however, don’t fret, as the concept of having a double exists on a quantum level too. Every particle has its antimatter twin, which behaves entirely opposite to it. Experiments have shown particles behaving like this even when they are not at all in close proximity to each other – in theory twin particles will interact with each other even if they’re separated by an entire universe.

What if we, like particles, were each connected by some weird unknown force transcendent of time and space? Perhaps by writing this I’m affecting the life of some extra-terrestrial in a faraway galaxy. And how many of my parallel universe doppelgangers are thinking the exact same thing right now?
