S+ Stimulant: Healing & The Mind

Bill Moyers  is respected American journalist and public commentator. Bill has been extensively involved with public broadcasting, producing documentaries and news journal programs. He has won numerous awards and honorary degrees for his investigative journalism and civic activities. He has become well known as a trenchant critic of the U.S. media (particularly modern, corporately structured news media).

We feel that Bill is one of the most inspiring and enduring examples of quality journalism. Throughout his prolific career he has intrepidly explored new ideas and repeatedly challenged the status quo. While he is often associated with politics and media studies, we are particularly fond of his more humanist reporting.

We recently came across his seminal 1993 documentary series Healing and the Mind in which he ‘talks with physicians, scientists, therapists, and patients – people who were taking a new look at the meaning of sickness and health.’ The five-part series is full of fascinating and provocative interviews that search for answers to perplexing questions. Episodes include: The Mystery of Chi, The Mind Body Connection, Healing From Within, The Art of Healing and Wounded Healers.

We were particularly impressed with Bill’s intellectual elegance and curiosity in this episode:

This documentary series is worth watching not only for its fascinating content, but also as a time capsule by which we can gauge how much our perceptions regarding previously esoteric subjects have evolved over the years, or conversely remained stagnant.
